AUTO & MOTO ARTISANS - AUSTRALIA

1978 Toyota HiAce

Vans are by far the best way to move motorcycles, and if you gotta have a van why not make it a cool vintage one!

Toyota's second-gen HiAce (1977 to 1982) has a bit of a cult following in
cute-car conscious Japan (look at that smiley face), so they have some street appeal alongside workhorse credentials that are beyond reproach.

Pretty much a 'one box' version of the trusty HiLux ute, this Aussie-spec 1978 standard wheelbase (2340mm) rolled out of the factory with a two-litre 18R-C petrol engine, four speed gearbox and drum brakes all 'round.

Running and registered, but rough and rusty (check out the final lightbox picture and the build blog for 'the way we were') it turned up at the right time at the right price.

Looks good now, but there was a bit of work involved to get there...
